Conetop Beer Can in Knitted Porcelain

$125.00

Your eyes will tell you this piece is soft knitting but your touch will tell you it’s clay. And they both will be right in a certain sense, because clay generally doesn’t get knitted, and knitting generally isn’t at all hard and stiff. But here it is: a lovely intricately knit and shaped replica of an old conetop beer can. (Check out the other Beer Cans here in my shop for a completely different body of work too!) What’s going on with this one? It starts with a handknit cotton shape which is dipped in liquid porcelain, shaped as it dries and fired to temperature. The cotton burns away, leaving a lovely detailed memory of the knitting. It is light, showing all the handknit details exactly as they were. It is strong because porcelain, contrary to its appearance, is quite dense. What remains is the amazement. It has a solid porcelain slab bottom tailored exactly to its stance. See all the photos to enjoy this one of a kind piece. We sometimes have several in this pattern, each one naturally different. Yours will be similar to the photos, but will have its own charms.

  • 100% Porcelain
